Company History

 

Founded by Carmen Ching-man Lo, former senior actor/director of Chung Ying Theatre Company. Lo obtained a Master degree in Philosophy and was a Film and Video major in Columbia College, Chicago.

The Company has been operated by a model of non-profit making theatre troupe. The name of the Company indicates that cinematic language does take an important role in shaping the theatrical style of the productions. The Company mainly focuses on original works which explore the horizons and soul of modern people, especially for young audience. The elements of intertwining imagination and reality plus the past and the present, is also one of the phenomenal characteristics of the works of the Company. 

Recent productions My Luxurious 50 Sqft Life won Best Performance, Best Play, and Best Stage Effect at the 2015 Hong Kong Theatre Libre; My Luxurious 50 Sqft Life and Informer both awarded the Top Ten Most Popular Productions at the Hong Kong Drama Awards 2015.

 

Moreover, the Company takes the initiative to explore overseas cultural exchange opportunities. Since 2003, productions have been toured in Scotland, Adelaide, Seoul, Yokohama, Singapore, Shanghai, Taipei, the Philippines, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Macau. 

  • In 2003, the Company was invited by the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) to present Autumn Maze (English version) in the “Asia Pacific Festival-Conference of Women in the Arts”. Ms Ching-man Lo, the Artistic Director of Cinematic Theatre, also presented her thesis at the Conference.

  • In 2004, another production Tell me More (bilingual version) was presented in the touring performance of “Women’s Heart Plays” jointly organized by Singapore, Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

  • In 2005, in the Asian Women Theatre Conference (Shanghai, China), Ms Ching-man Lo also presented her thesis and the excerpts of Winter Solemnity were screened.

  • In May 2008, invited by the National Taiwan University of Arts, College of Performing Arts, the Company went to Taiwan to take part in the 2008 Symposium on Italian Playwright Dario Fo and Ms Ching-man Lo was also invited to present her thesis “The woman characters in Dario Fo’s women plays”.

  • In February 2009, Waiting for the Match was invited to join the 7th Chinese Drama Festival organized by Chinese-Taipei Theatre Association. This production was also invited by Theatre Farmers, Macau to perform in the Studio Theatre of Centro Cultural De Macau,

  • In May 2010, Waiting for the Match was invited to join The Beijing – Hong Kong – Shanghai Young Directors’ Showcase @Modern Drama Valley Expo Season, organized by Shanghai Modern Drama Valley in collaboration with the Beijing Theatre Association and Hong Kong Arts Development Council at Shanghai Theatre Academy .

  • In 2011, Ms Lo was invited to join the 8th Chinese Drama Festival and represented Hong Kong to present the thesis “HK Theatre: The dimensions of video image on multi-media theatre ”, exchanging ideas with theatre artists from Beijing, Macau, Taiwan, Shanghai, Singapore and Japan, etc.

  • In August 2014, supported by the Arts Development Fund of the Home Affairs Bureau, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, production My luxurious 50 sqft Life was joined the EDINBURGH Fringe Festival.

  • In August 2015, production My luxurious 50 sqft Life was joined the 8th Taipei Fringe Festival and got the award "The Yong Zhen Fringe Award".

  • In February 2016, "The Feast" was invited to perform at Adelaide, Australia.

  • In March 2016, "My Luxurious 50 sqft Life" was invited to perform at Shenzhen.

  • In February 2017, "Watching U......" was invited to TPAM at Japan.

  • In October 2017, "Watching U......" was invited to PAMS Link at South Korea.

  • In September 2018, Ms Lo and Eric Pong, playwright of "Watching U......" were invited to Asia Playwrights Festival 2018. 

 

Besides, the Company also takes an active role in the development of drama education. Projects include the dramatic arts camp and workshop jointly organized by Lingnan University and Hong Kong Baptist University. In 2006, the Company was invited by the Department of Chinese of Lingnan University to join the Writer-in-Residence Scheme (The Writer-in-Residence of Lingnan University of 2005 is famous novelist Ms Wang An-i) to organize and teach the ‘Creative Writing’ programme of script writing for one semester.

 

Since July 2007, Cinematic Theater Company Limited has been offered the Year Grant from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Besides , the Company was also offered the Multi-project Grant for the project of ‘Young Playwrights Scheme’ for 3 years and the grant from Drama Devolved Grant Scheme for Emerging Artists for organizing “The HK Little Theatre Fest” during July and August 2009.

 

Cinematic Theatre was registered as Cinematic Theatre Company Limited in March 2005. We will persist in our enthusiasm in pursuing truthfulness, perfections in our productions. Based in Hong Kong, we are dedicated to expand our horizon to the world, exert unlimited creativity and professionalism as our vision and mission.
